MESSAGE FROM OUR FRIEND JOHN TALBOT

I wanted to write and update you on our effort to take back our country from the corporate lobbyists.

As I said previously, I didn’t intend to launch this effort until October, but we have had such a strong response to my BookTV appearance on CSPAN2 and my three day email exchange with Simon Johnson published last week in salon.com that I figure it is time to get going.  We are now over 400 strong and growing rapidly. 

While there are hundreds of good ideas about how we can try to stop corporate influence in Washington, this effort will focus initially on building a network of 10 to 20 million concerned Americans that can then become a force politically, and maybe more importantly, in the consumer marketplace. 

The courts and the congress make it difficult to address this problem directly, so we will instead focus on the source of the money, the big corporate givers and lobbyers to our government.  Once we build this group of concerned citizens there are lots of good things we can do and fight for, but I think it is in our interest to focus solely on corporate lobbying for now.  It keeps our message simple and it is non-partisan, every American should be in favor of returning democratic principles to their government. Once we get corporations out of Washington you will be amazed at how many issues the American people are in complete agreement on.

I wish you all could have read the 400 emails I received over the last two weeks in support of our efforts.  All were very supportive and most offered whatever people could do to help the effort.  More importantly, it was obvious from the tone of the messages that the people responding were good hearted people who care not only about their country, but about all Americans. 

For the last ten years I have been watching the news and writing books about this problem and with each passing day getting a bit more depressed, but now with this effort, I can’t wait until tomorrow.
