Services Available Through the City of Cleveland

These programs are available in the City of Cleveland to assist seniors with their homes. Call (216) 664-2833 unless another number is indicated.

SHAP

The Senior Homeowner Assistance Program known as SHAP provides a one-time grant to Cleveland residents age 60+ or disabled adults who meet income eligibility guidelines and own single or two family homes in need of critical, health, safety and maintenance repairs. Applicants must live in the property in question and be able to show clear title. Call the Department of Aging at (216) 664-2833.

Chore Services

This program provides free home maintenance for moderate to low income Clevelanders aged 60 and up. It helps residents live independent lifestyles while improving and maintaining the City's appearance. Chore workers are City employees who provide services such as general and heavy house cleaning, lawn mowing, removing/installing storm windows, painting (limited), simple home repairs, and carpet cleaning. They will also install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and remove snow.

Senior Initiative

This program provides Cleveland seniors and disabled adults home repair assistance to avoid housing violations citations and predatory lenders or scam contractors.

Leaf and Lawn Programs

The Department of Aging is currently accepting applications for the 2008 no-cost Senior Lawn Cutting Program. This program runs from April to October.

Fresh Coat Cleveland

Volunteers are recruited to paint homes, cut, and trim yards of eligible low-income seniors and disabled adults. The project is conducted in collaboration with the Department of Community Development and non-profit faith-based organizations.

Other Available Services

Cleveland Action to Support Housinq-CASH

This program is a local nonprofit community development organization offering low interest rates to all Cleveland property owners and investors to renovate or remodel their homes. Call (216) 621-7350 or visit www.cashcleveland.org.

Services for Independent Living

Service for Independent Living provides services and advocacy, which empower persons with disabilities to lead self-directed and productive lives in the community. They provide advocacy, accessibility services, information and referral, peer support programs, personal care assistance and transitional education programs. EHEAP

The Emergency Home Energy Assistance Program provides payment assistance once per heating season to income-eligible residents who have been disconnected or who have received a disconnection notice. Call (216) 518-04014.

PIPP

The Percentage of Income Payment Plan arranges with the gas and electric utility services for payment based on a percentage of gross monthly income. Contact your local provider for details.

HWAP

The Home Weatherization Assistance Program offers low or fixed-income residents energy-efficient measures designed to decrease hearing bills. Call (216) 664-2045.

2-1-1 First Call for Help

This program can confidentially assist anyone looking for social, health and government resources. Call (216)436-2000.

Homestead Exemption

This is a property tax reduction program Nonqualifying homeowners. You must be at least 65 years old or permanently disabled; own and occupy your home, and have a household income of $26,200 or less. Applications are available from the auditor's office from the first Monday in January until the first Monday in June. Call (216) 443-7050.

AT&T Ohio Lifeline

This program assists low-income residents with the connection and maintenance of local telephone service. Call 1-800-335-8721.

Benefits Check Up

The Cleveland Department of Aging offers this program for seniors that help you quickly learn if you are eligible for a host of federal, state and local assistance programs. This is also available through the county. Call (216) 664-3418.

 

 

Cleveland Care Calls

This is an automated telephone reassurance program offered to Cleveland seniors at no charge. Calls are made to check on your well-being. Call (216) 664-6316.

Cleveland Division of Water Affordabilitv Program

This program gives you a 20% discount off your quarterly water bill. Eligibility is based on HEAP guidelines. Call (216) 664-3130.

Cleveland Public Power Winter Program

To assist customers who have experienced some difficulty in paying electric bills, Cleveland Public Power offers a one time winder payment option to prevent a disconnection or service or for restoration of service. This program is available only from October 16 through April 15.

Cleveland Rehab Loan Programs

Services Available Through Cuvahoqa County County

HEAP

You May Qualify For a Senior Citizen Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, Homestead Exemption, Home Energy Assistance Programs, Family Caregiver Support Program, Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP), Homestead Water Rate Discount, AT & T Lifeline Ohio Program, Food Stamp Program, Legal Rights Service, Medicare/Medicaid and the Senior Employment Program. Call the Department of Senior and Adult Services at 216 420 6750 to learn more.

The Ohio Department of Development offers several programs to help income-eligible Ohioans pay their utility bills and improve the energy efficiency of their homes, including the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Consumers can apply for HEAP from September 1 through March 31. Processing the application in Columbus may take 10-12 weeks. To check the status of your HEAP application, call 1-800-282-0880.
